Are You Making A Career Move To A New City? Make Plans Ahead
You just landed your much-awaited job and are relocating to a new city. You must be excited and feeling on top of the world. It is a new start, new opportunities, new goals, and you are looking forward to every new prospect that is bound to come your way.
However, you are worried at the same time because of shifting to a new place, which comes with its own hassles and can be quite intimidating. You are also worried that you have to first find some accommodation and you do not know anyone there who can help you!
It is pretty tough, however, not unmanageable if you plan ahead. Preparing yourself ahead of the big change will save you from getting lost in the mayhem. You can make this process a whole lot easier for yourself by following these simple steps.
Find Out Who You Know
There certainly must be someone you know where you are moving – a friend, some relatives or ex-colleagues. Try contacting them one by one either by calling or mailing them. Talk to them to get some idea about the place and note down their advice. You can now make a list of all the people you know there who can help you get settled.
Search on Social Media
One of the easiest ways to find people in a new city is to search in social media. Browse through LinkedIn and Facebook to find out which of your contacts are currently staying in the city you are moving to.
You can also join the group of people belonging to that region. You can start a conversation with them and ask for suggestions and advice about the new place.
Keep All Documents Safe
Do not make the mistake of leaving all of your packing for the last moment. It will only add to your worries. You might even leave behind some important documents while you are running about taking care of last minute details.
To be on the safer side, make a list of all the important documents you need to take with you, keep them in a separate folder and keep them in your laptop bag or backpack.
Shift Before Joining
Avoid the last moment rush and confusion. Reach the new city at least one week before your date of joining. You do not want to reach office late on the first day itself due to some mishaps, which could have been avoided.
To make sure that everything goes smoothly on the D-day, you need to arrive and settle down in the new city ahead of time. This will give you sufficient time to acclimatize yourself to your new surroundings as well as prepare for your new job.
We know that it is exhilarating when you are taking up a new challenge and are looking forward to a fresh start. However, in all this excitement, do not lose track of all the important things that need to be taken care of. Plan ahead and have your network ready before you land there finally.
